Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Volunteer Centre of the Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD) organized, on Tuesday evening, June 29th, the second virtual meeting of the "Gesture of Pride” event, which is an annual gathering that brings together volunteers.
The Centre revealed the most prominent results of the volunteer work that was implemented during the first half of this year, seeing about 152 volunteer opportunities implemented by 2325 volunteers registering 100,174 volunteering hours.

On this occasion, Afaf Al Marri, Head of the SSSD and Chairman of the Higher Committee for Volunteering in the Emirate of Sharjah, expressed her happiness with these percentages, which reveal the extent of the public’s desire for voluntary work and its impact on the development and advancement of societies, especially in the wake of the Corona pandemic, which forced all to set a new agenda for their lives, to prevent and protect them and their families from infection.

She said that a large segment of citizens and residents have taken part in the volunteering process substantiated by their love and desire for giving and help.

Al Marri added that the turnout of volunteers confirmed the importance of community partnerships that unite in crises and emergencies, to confront any scourge or harm that affects society and the UAE, and join hands to overcome it or mitigate its negative repercussions.

She clarified that the Higher Committee has taken into account all the necessary preventive and precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the virus, in cooperation with the local and federal private and public institutions and departments that contributed their cadres by registering in various volunteer programmes to which she extended all thanks and appreciation.

For her part, Hessa Al Hammadi, Director of the Family Cohesion Department of the SSSD, and Rapporteur of the Higher Committee for Volunteering, said that the "Gesture of Pride" is an annual meeting organised by the Sharjah Volunteer Centre, which brings together the volunteering parties to thank them for their voluntary efforts.

Currently, due to the pandemic, “Gesture of Pride” is organised virtually with the aim of providing moral support and motivating and encouraging members of society to voluntary work.

She also directed her message to those wishing to volunteer, to register in the volunteer lists on the electronic platform: https://sssd.shj.ae/volunteers.
