Munich Opera holds premiere ahead of Germany's partial lockdown

November 01, 2020 / 2:49 PM
Sharjah 24 – AFP: The Bavarian State Opera in Munich (Bayerische Staatsoper) welcomes 50 authorised spectators for the premiere of Walter Braunfels' opera "Die Vögel" (The Birds), just over 24 hours before closing its doors for four weeks as Germany enters a partial lockdown to try to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr. Jan Brachmann, member of public said,  "It's totally depressing to sit in such an empty room, it's sad and dark. We are in an atmosphere of rehearsal, not a premiere. It's painful to be here."

Commenting on this, Michael Nagy, Bariton, one of the main roles in the opera "The Birds" added, "There is a certain energy, but to talk about an audience when the floor is completely empty. You can't do that. Despite everything for us, it's a great stroke of luck to be able to play at least our premiere before the confinement comes into force in Germany. "

"For the art itself, whether 20, 50, 500 or 5000 people appreciate it, it doesn't make much difference. For it is the work of art, its representation which is important, and for artists to share it. It is also important for us to bring life into this house, " stated Nikolaus Bachler, Director of the Munich Opera House (Bayerische Staatsoper).
