Sharjah 24 – AFP: At least five people were killed and five others injured after an Amazon cargo plane overshot a runway while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday, striking vehicles and catching fire, officials said.

Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue Chief Ray Jadallah said three injured people were taken to trauma centres in critical condition, while two others were treated at a local hospital. Several victims were trapped inside vehicles, requiring specialised technical rescue teams.

The Boeing 767, operating as Prime Air Flight 7598, arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, at 1:58pm and caught fire following the crash. Thick smoke was seen rising from the aircraft as emergency crews rushed to the scene.

Around 60 fire apparatuses and nearly 200 firefighters and rescue personnel responded. Crews used foam to extinguish the engine fire, while hazardous materials teams secured the aircraft's engine and contained a fuel leak.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it has launched an investigation into the runway excursion, while the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will also determine the cause of the incident.

Amazon expressed condolences to the victims’ families and said it would cooperate fully with the investigation.

The crash temporarily closed all runways and taxiways at Miami International Airport, causing widespread flight delays and cancellations. Two of the airport’s four runways later reopened.
