Police respond to Surf Avenue incident
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) said officers responded to reports of gunfire near Surf Avenue and West 31st Street. On arrival, they found eight victims with gunshot wounds, all of whom were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Victims include children and adults
The injured range in age from 6 to 37. Among them are a six-year-old child struck in the abdomen, children aged seven and 12, and a 14-year-old boy hit in both legs. Adult victims include a 21-year-old woman shot in the chest, a 25-year-old woman shot in the leg, and two men aged 33 and 37 with wounds to the chest and shoulder.
One victim in critical condition
Authorities said the 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition, while the other seven victims are expected to survive and are listed in stable condition.
Investigation ongoing
Police recovered a firearm at the scene but have not made any arrests. No suspect descriptions have been released, and investigators are working to determine the circumstances and motive behind the shooting.
Timing and location of the incident
The shooting occurred shortly after the 9:45 p.m. Independence Day fireworks display. Officials are still trying to determine whether it happened during the show or as crowds were dispersing near the Coney Island boardwalk and amphitheater area.
Recent violence raises concerns
The incident follows another fatal shooting in Coney Island just days earlier that left a 24-year-old man dead, adding to concerns about ongoing gun violence in the area despite heightened police presence during the holiday period.
