US Central Command said the strikes targeted three Iranian oil tankers, one of which was located off the coast of Kharg Island, a key hub for Iran’s oil exports.
The command said the attacks were carried out in response to ballistic missile fire from the IRGC at two US Navy ships.
“The message is clear to the IRGC: if you fire on two of our ships, we will impose a greater economic cost by destroying three of yours,” US Central Command commander Admiral Brad Cooper said.
Earlier, Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that four US missiles struck an oil tanker in the Kharg anchorage area. Citing local sources, it said the attack caused no casualties and that the tanker’s crew was being evacuated.
US Central Command said that none of its personnel were injured during the incident.
At the time of publication, Iranian authorities had not issued an official statement.
