Sharjah 24 – AFP: US President Donald Trump stated on Friday that he will "soon" declare the Strait of Hormuz to be United States territory as part of efforts to defeat Iran, though a White House official later clarified to the Wall Street Journal that the remarks were made in jest.

Trump claims US control over Strait

Speaking at a political rally at a police academy in New York state, Trump asserted that the critical energy waterway—which Tehran effectively closed at the outset of the Middle East conflict—is controlled by Washington.

"After we finish defeating Iran... pretty soon I'll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States," Trump told the cheering crowd, adding, "We have the blockade. No ships get through unless we want them to."
