Sharjah 24: Sharjah FC head coach José Morais stressed the importance of securing victory against Al Jazira in the second round of the ADNOC Pro League.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s game at Sharjah Stadium, Morais said he hopes to maintain a strong level of competition and improve the team’s collective performance. He added that Sharjah are preparing to face a respected opponent with good capabilities, expecting an exciting and enjoyable match that will be difficult for both sides.

Regarding Luan Pereira’s role in the match, Morais declined to disclose his tactical plans, saying: “I want to make the opponent think a little about where Luan will play.” He stressed that the player is an important part of the team wherever he plays on the pitch.

Morais said the Al Jazira match is highly important as the team’s second league game, but noted that Al Jazira’s familiarity with Sharjah’s players does not necessarily give them an advantage, given the changes each season, the arrival of new players and the development of understanding and relationships among teammates on the pitch.

The Sharjah coach added that the team’s focus at this stage is on maintaining a good level, improving performance and strengthening understanding between the players, noting that matches will become increasingly important as the season progresses.

On the possibility of strengthening the squad in the coming period, Morais said he is happy with the current group, explaining that Sharjah always seek to develop the team whenever a suitable opportunity arises in the transfer market to add quality. He noted that the team does not have major needs, but said a left-footed centre-back, along with an additional right-back, could help achieve greater balance in the squad.

Sharjah player Laba Kodjo, meanwhile, said the players’ full focus has shifted to the Al Jazira match after beating Al Dhafra in the opening round. He added that the competition has become stronger following the reinforcements made by various league clubs.

“The next match is always the most important. We respect Al Jazira and know they have outstanding players and high quality, but we are Sharjah and we are playing at home. We have to give our all to win,” he said.

Laba added: “I always try to score, but I do not put pressure on myself to score in every match. The most important thing for me is to do my role and help the team earn three points.”

He concluded: “We approach every match as if it were a final and always fight to win and make our fans happy. We have to stay together, and with Sharjah fans, we can have a good season.”
