Hungarian police inspect a Polish tourist bus after it crashed on the M3 motorway near Mezokeresztes, Hungary
Sharjah 24 – AFP: A tragic bus crash on a Hungarian highway early Sunday left 12 people dead and dozens injured after a coach carrying Polish tourists veered off the road and overturned.

Coach carrying Polish tourists crashes

The vehicle, traveling from Serbia to Poland with 57 passengers and two drivers, crashed at around 1:00 AM on the M3 highway near Mezőkeresztes, roughly 140 kilometers east of Budapest.

According to the national disaster management agency, the bus left the road, ended up in a ditch, and came to a stop on its side, trapping several passengers beneath the crushed roof until rescuers pulled them through the windows. Two cranes were later brought in to lift the wreckage.

Dozens injured in deadly crash

Eleven people were pronounced dead at the scene, while another succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

Emergency services reported that at least 10 people sustained critical injuries—with a Polish diplomat noting that five were fighting for their lives—while 37 others suffered minor injuries and were transported to hospitals across four cities.

Driver detained as investigation continues

Hungarian Interior Minister Gabor Posfai stated that the driver had been detained, with police reports indicating he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

The tragedy marks Hungary's deadliest road accident since 2003.

Poland and Hungary offer support

Leaders from both nations expressed profound grief over the disaster. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that a special flight had been ordered to repatriate passengers well enough to travel, emphasising that all affected individuals would receive comprehensive medical and consular assistance.
