Sharjah 24 – Reuter: South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has proposed formal talks with North Korea to end the 1950-53 Korean War, which concluded with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.

Speaking on the anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule, Lee urged Pyongyang to halt mutual threats and open direct discussions, suggesting the dialogue could also address measures to curb the North's nuclear advancement.

Proposal comes amid rising tensions

The proposal comes amid heightened regional tensions. North Korea recently denounced upcoming joint US-South Korean military drills—scheduled to begin Monday—and fired two missiles in response to Japan's defense build-up.

Pyongyang has also deepened its military and economic ties with Moscow, supplying troops and munitions for Russia's war in Ukraine in exchange for financial, energy, and military technology support.

Seoul shifts approach to North Korea

Since taking office in June 2025, South Korea's dovish president has pivoted toward unconditional talks and shifted focus from total denuclearization to halting the expansion of Pyongyang's nuclear activities.

North Korea has yet to respond to the overtures.
