The announcement was made following a UNESCO committee meeting in South Korea, with Tunisia’s Ministry of Cultural Affairs highlighting the village’s outstanding cultural, artistic and spiritual value.

A major tourist destination known for its cobbled streets and bougainvillea, Sidi Bou Said was established in the 18th century around the shrine of Sufi scholar Sidi Bou Said. The village continues to face challenges, including preservation needs and damage from heavy rainfall that affected the area earlier this year.
