The landslide buried more than 10 residential buildings in Pingshui District, prompting rescue teams to continue searching the debris with excavators.

Chinese authorities said residents of 21 buildings were evacuated, while more than 1,100 people living within a one-kilometre radius of the site, including those in hillside and low-lying areas, were relocated to safety.

The incident coincided with warnings from the China Meteorological Administration about heavy rainfall across parts of southern China and an increased risk of geological disasters, including in Chongqing.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that railway authorities suspended some passenger services on the Shanghai–Kunming line because of heavy rain, and several tourist sites in Yunnan Province were temporarily closed.

Authorities in Guangxi are also preparing for another spell of heavy rain, expected to continue until Tuesday, as the region recovers from the impact of Typhoon Maisak earlier this month.
