The US Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred 155 kilometres west of Hihifo, Tonga, at a depth of 259 kilometres.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or material damage resulting from the earthquake.
Tonga is an archipelago comprising 176 islands scattered across the South Pacific, of which only 52 are inhabited. It lies to the north-west of New Zealand and Australia.
