Sharjah 24 – BNA: Severe Tropical Storm Francisco is expected to intensify into a typhoon over the Philippine Sea later today, according to a Sunday advisory from the Philippine weather agency. While the storm is unlikely to make a direct landfall in the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) noted that its projected path could bring it closer to the northernmost tip of Luzon if its track continues to shift westward.

Storm position and movement monitored by PAGASA

As of the latest tracking, Francisco was located approximately 1,315 kilometers east of Luzon, moving west-northwest at 25 km/h. The storm currently packs maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h and gusts of up to 125 km/h.

Heavy rainfall expected from Monday

Although the typhoon is forecast to remain over open waters, meteorologists warned that heavy rainfall triggered by both the storm and the southwest monsoon is expected to begin affecting parts of the country starting Monday.
