Popovic took charge of the Australian national team in 2024, succeeding Graham Arnold, who is now head coach of the Iraqi national team, which is also competing in the World Cup.
During his tenure, Popovic has overseen 18 matches, recording 10 wins, four draws, and four defeats.
Speaking from the US state of California, where the Australian team is preparing for its Group D opener on Saturday in the Canadian city of Vancouver, Popovic expressed his pride in leading the Australian national team through to the Asian Cup by saying: " From the first day in the role, I have sought to balance the team's long-term interests with achieving the required short-term results, and the primary objective was to secure qualification for the World Cup."
Saudi Arabia is scheduled to host the AFC Asian Cup finals from 7 January to 5 February next year.
