Sharjah 24 – AFP: The powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Kim Yo Jong, declared on Sunday that the country's nuclear weapons programme represents a "line of no retreat."

In a statement carried by state media, she emphasised that North Korea’s status as a nuclear weapons state is completely irreversible and asserted that Pyongyang "will never tolerate any threat or compromise" regarding its national sovereignty and security.

Kim Yo Jong defended the expansion of Pyongyang's arsenal by criticising the "ceaseless arms buildup" conducted by the United States and its regional allies. Pointing specifically to reported US weapons sales to South Korea, she argued that these hostile developments fully justify North Korea's ongoing efforts to strengthen its military deterrence.

Defiance signals firm stance ahead of Chinese President's visit

The high-level statement comes immediately ahead of an upcoming visit to North Korea by Chinese President Xi Jinping—his first in seven years. While Beijing remains Pyongyang's primary political and economic lifeline amidst heavy international sanctions, Kim Yo Jong used the platform to reject recent American claims that Washington and Beijing had jointly reaffirmed a commitment to North Korea's denuclearisation.

Dismissing those reports as outright misinformation spread by US officials, her remarks underscore Pyongyang's absolute refusal to negotiate away its strategic capabilities.

The declaration reaffirms the hardline stance North Korea has held since officially branding its nuclear status as "irreversible" in 2019, firmly shutting the door on international demands for disarmament.
