North Korea, which is believed to operate uranium enrichment facilities at Yongbyon, Kangson and Kusong, said Kim inspected a new atomic facility and reviewed plans to significantly strengthen the country's nuclear forces.
KCNA reported that Kim highlighted an "ambitious future plan" to expand North Korea’s nuclear capabilities at an accelerated pace, while reaffirming Pyongyang’s position that its nuclear weapons programme is irreversible despite international pressure.
During the visit, Kim stated that the country's capacity to produce weapons-grade nuclear material has more than doubled over the past five years.
Although North Korean authorities did not disclose the facility’s location, analysts believe it is likely the newly completed uranium enrichment plant at Yongbyon.
Analysts noted that North Korea appears to be accelerating the production of nuclear materials to support a growing arsenal of tactical nuclear weapons and missile systems.
According to experts, the country’s recent missile tests and expanding nuclear infrastructure signal efforts to reinforce its status as a nuclear power amid shifting international dynamics.
North Korea withdrew from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in 1993 and has since conducted six nuclear tests. It remains under multiple United Nations sanctions and is believed to possess dozens of nuclear warheads.
