Sharjah24: As part of its strategy to equip students with the tools of the future and expose them to the world’s best scientific practices, the College of Engineering at the University of Sharjah (UOS) organised an intensive scientific and training visit for a group of Nuclear Engineering Program students to Vienna, the Austrian capital. The visit encompassed the major international nuclear organizations and facilities. The trip was conducted under the supervision of Dr Bassam Khuwaileh, Coordinator of the Nuclear Engineering Program, and Ms. Sara Al-Balooshi, Acting Director of Operations. It included 14 high-achieving students: Hoor Mohammed Al Ali, Hoor Mubarak Al Suwaidi, Mira Mohammed Al Kaabi, Rashed Rames Al-Kathiri, Hind Mohammed Alblooshi, Ward Hassan, Shamsa Yousuf Al-Awadhi, Ghalya Farid Al Harmoudi, Saeed Ali Al Muhairi, Tariq Ahmed Al-Mashaari, Ali Salem Al Hufeiti, Mariam Saeed Al Harthi, Mira Abdulrahman Al Mehri, and Zainab Abdulla Alblooshi.
During the visit, the students participated in an intensive training program at the IAEA headquarters, which included technical workshops on nuclear technology assessment methodologies, the use of advanced information tools for nuclear energy management and its applications, and an introduction to nuclear applications in non-electrical fields. The program also encompassed field visits to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), the IAEA laboratories, and the Incident and Emergency Centre, providing students with a unique opportunity to observe how nuclear crises are managed and how radiological safety is ensured in accordance with the highest international standards. The scientific trip also included a visit to the TRIGA reactor at the Vienna University of Technology, offering students a rare chance for direct engagement with the world’s foremost expertise in this domain. The student delegation observed the operations of the TRIGA reactor at TU Wien, and participated in practical training exercises on basic reactor operation, as well as the use of simulation equipment for handling normal operating conditions and emergency scenarios. They also toured IAEA reactor technology facilities and radiation laboratories equipped with the most advanced technical instrumentation, which helped bridge the gap between academic theory and complex field applications.

This scientific visit forms part of the University of Sharjah’s vision to prepare a generation of Emirati engineers and researchers capable of leading the peaceful nuclear energy sector and managing nuclear and radiological emergencies in the country. This participation broadens the students’ research horizons and enriches their professional experience on an international level, enhancing their competitiveness and supporting the University’s vision of graduating national competencies armed with hands-on international experience and advanced technical awareness in one of the most vital and strategic fields.
