Sharjah24: The wave of upsets at the French Open, the second Grand Slam of the tennis season, continued as Poland’s Iga Swiatek, world number three and four-time champion, was eliminated in the last 16 after a 7-5, 6-1 defeat to Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, ranked 15th in the world.

Tournament sees major upsets

The tournament in France began without men’s defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, ranked second in the world, due to injury. The first week then saw the exits of top seed Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, and Alex de Minaur. On Saturday, women’s defending champion Coco Gauff, ranked fourth, also fell.

Kostyuk reaches first quarter-final

Kostyuk, who recently won the Madrid WTA 1000 title, reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros for the first time in her career after defeating Swiatek.

Swiatek’s title defence ends

With this defeat, Swiatek extends her wait to reclaim the French Open title, which she first won in 2020 and then added three consecutive titles from 2022 to 2024.
