Brazilian João Fonseca, ranked 30th in the world, overcame a two-set deficit to defeat Serbian Novak Djokovic in five sets 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in the third round of the French Open, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, after a marathon match lasting 4 hours and 53 minutes.
This early exit for the former world number one, currently ranked fourth, further delays his quest, at the age of 39, for a record 25th Grand Slam title, an achievement he has been chasing for three years. When asked how he maintained his belief in his ability to come back after being down two sets, Fonseca replied, "Honestly, I didn't believe in it."
The exit of Djokovic, the last remaining Grand Slam champion, has thrown the competition wide open, especially after the withdrawal of two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz and the second-round exit of world number one and favourite Jannik Sinner.
Fonseca is seen as one of the players capable of breaking the Sinner-Alcaraz duopoly, and at the age of 19, he achieved the biggest victory of his career, his first win against a top-five player.
