France, Britain and Portugal have all experienced their hottest May days on record during the ongoing heatwave.
Temperatures remained above 33°C in the Paris region on Saturday, while several other areas of France recorded temperatures exceeding 30°C.
According to Meteo-France, the arrival of a slightly cooler air mass is expected to lower temperatures on Saturday night. However, the agency warned that northern France could experience localised but potentially severe storms, accompanied by hail and wind gusts exceeding 80 kilometres per hour.
France recorded a peak temperature of 37.8°C in the Charente department. The extreme heat led to train service cancellations and power outages in some cities. Authorities in both France and Britain have attributed several deaths to the unusually high temperatures.
