According to Météo-France climatologist Matthieu Sorel, the scope of the heatwave was colossal. Between Saturday and Wednesday, the country registered over 100 records for the highest minimum temperatures and more than 260 records for maximum temperatures. France also established a new national average temperature record for the month of May, which peaked at 24.9°C earlier in the week.
Unprecedented highs signal a growing trend of extreme weather
The southwestern city of Angoulême witnessed the most extreme conditions, reaching 37.8°C to mark the highest temperature ever officially recorded in metropolitan France during May. Although a cooler weather front is forecast to arrive over the weekend, climate scientists stress that these early-season heatwaves are rapidly accelerating in both frequency and severity.
Data from Météo-France indicates that the vast majority of the country's recorded heatwaves since 1947 have been concentrated within the last few decades, showing a dramatic spike since the year 2000. This localized surge aligns with broader international climate warnings, including recent United Nations assessments indicating that global temperatures are projected to remain near record-breaking thresholds for the foreseeable future.
