In response to NATO's condemnation and its vow to "defend every inch of Allied territory," Medvedev dismissed the backlash, asserting that such occurrences are bound to continue. He argued that European governments have effectively entered the conflict through their support of Ukraine, thereby integrating their own territories into the active war zone. While noting that the origin of the specific drone in Romania remains unverified, Medvedev criticized European leaders as "impotent" and stated that EU citizens "will not be able to sleep peacefully" while the war persists.
Kremlin ties drone risks to Western military aid
Medvedev explicitly linked the rising drone risks to regions involved in manufacturing or supplying military hardware to Ukraine. He claimed that European-made drones, components, and intelligence are actively used in strikes against Russia, causing domestic damage.
Framing the situation as a reciprocal consequence, Medvedev suggested that civilian infrastructure on both sides is now vulnerable. Concurrently, Russian state media reported that President Vladimir Putin has been briefed on the Romania incident. Russia’s Foreign Ministry also announced it is preparing a response to Romania’s recent decision to close the Russian consulate in Constanța.
