Demonstrating the University of Sharjah’s (UOS) commitment to advancing innovation in clean energy, the recent symposium highlighted opportunities to build strong partnerships between scientific research and the wider community. The initiative aligns with UAE Vision 2031 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, reaffirming the University’s dedication to sustainability and environmental awareness.
The programme featured two scientific sessions and several interactive panels covering cutting-edge topics such as renewable energy technologies, energy management and storage, decarbonisation, the circular economy, green hydrogen, and smart grids. Participants underscored the UAE’s pioneering leadership in transitioning toward sustainable energy systems.
Discussions explored the far-reaching impacts of climate change on human life and stressed the importance of collaboration among government entities, private companies, and academic institutions. By addressing current challenges, UOS and its partners aim to provide practical, science-based solutions to mitigate climate change’s local and global effects.
In his opening remarks, Professor Maammar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Scientific Research and Graduate Studies, emphasised the symposium’s timely relevance and commended UOS’s leadership in sustainability. He noted that UOS ranks first nationally in sustainability performance, supported by its vibrant research community committed to advancing the UAE’s climate and energy goals.
Professor Hussein Al Awadhi, Director of the Research Institute of Sciences and Engineering (RISE), outlined the symposium’s goal of fostering collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and the public.
Professor Abdul Ghani Olabi, Director of the Sustainable Energy and Power Systems Research Center, showcased the center’s latest achievements in reducing emissions, minimising carbon footprints, and advancing solar energy technologies.
The symposium featured contributions from leading local and international figures, including Mohamed Al Hossani, CEO of Sustainability at Bee’ah Group; Professor Hossam Jawhara from Brunel University London; and François de Pée, Commercial Director at Emirates Biotech, alongside specialists from Italy, Greece, and across the UAE. Their discussions centred on breakthroughs in clean energy, policy innovation, and practical strategies for sustainable development.
A concluding roundtable, moderated by Professor Mohamed Ali Abdelkareem, examined international best practices in energy management and the green economy, emphasising the vital role of community participation and global cooperation. The session called for forward-thinking national policies and the integration of advanced technologies, reinforcing UOS’s role in translating research into actionable solutions.
The landmark event gathered a broad spectrum of researchers, climate experts, and industry leaders from the UAE and abroad. It fostered scientific and industrial partnerships crucial to supporting the nation’s vision of a greener, more resilient future driven by research, innovation, and collaboration.
