Sharjah 24 – WAM: The UAE Cybersecurity Council has urged the public to be vigilant against the rising use of “deepfake” videos and audio clips. Created through artificial intelligence, these tools produce realistic but deceptive content that can mislead audiences.

Rapid advances in AI heighten risks

The Council highlighted that AI technology is advancing quickly, enabling the accurate replication of real people’s voices and appearances. Such content can easily spread false or harmful information, posing a significant risk to individuals and institutions alike.

Public guidance for responsible digital use

The Council advised the public to exercise caution when consuming or sharing digital content, recommending verification of any material linked to public figures or national institutions through trusted and official sources. Refraining from reposting unverified content was emphasized as a key preventive measure.

Awareness as a first line of defence

Raising public awareness about deepfake technology was described as the first step in combating digital misinformation. Educating the public helps protect the reputation of UAE national symbols and official institutions from manipulation.

Legal measures against deepfake misuse

The Council noted that Federal Decree-Law No. (34) of 2021 on Countering Rumors and Cybercrimes imposes strict penalties on those creating or sharing deceptive content. These measures are part of the UAE’s broader efforts to safeguard society from cybercrime, fake news, and online fraud.
