According to the Observatory, the city experienced exceptionally high temperatures due to a stronger-than-normal upper-air anticyclone covering southern China, which delayed the arrival of cooler northern air masses until late in the month.
The average temperature for the month was 27.4°C, with the average minimum temperature rising to 25.6°C—both marking the highest October averages ever recorded in Hong Kong’s meteorological history.
Meanwhile, the monthly mean maximum temperature was 29.9°C, the second highest on record, further emphasising the persistence of extreme warmth throughout the month.
Meteorological experts have linked the prolonged heatwave to global warming trends that are increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Scientists warn that unless global carbon emissions are reduced, coastal and urban areas like Hong Kong will keep experiencing rising temperatures, humidity, and health risks.
