Sharjah 24 – Reuters: Severe floods and landslides caused by days of heavy monsoon rains have killed at least 44 people in southeastern Bangladesh and left more than one million people stranded as authorities intensify rescue and relief operations.

Widespread devastation across seven districts

Flooding across seven districts—including Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Moulvibazar, and Habiganj—has severely disrupted daily life, isolated communities, and affected nearly 268,000 households. Damaged roads, power outages, and disrupted communication networks have slowed emergency efforts, leaving many residents without access to food, electricity, and basic supplies.

Emergency rescue and relief operations

The army and navy are actively assisting relief operations by delivering food, drinking water, medicines, and other essentials to hard-to-reach areas. Local authorities have urged affected residents to move to designated shelters as support efforts continue to roll out.

Impact on refugee camps and climate context

The torrential rains also triggered deadly landslides in the Rohingya refugee camps located in Cox’s Bazar, resulting in the deaths of 16 refugees. Bangladesh frequently faces monsoon-related disasters, with climate change increasingly contributing to more frequent and severe extreme weather events in the region.
