In the capital, and after temporarily trailing Napoli by three points following the champions’ 1-0 win over Lecce on Tuesday, Roma pulled level with the southern club before their tough Sunday trip to San Siro, where they will face third-placed Milan, who are three points behind after drawing 1-1 with Atalanta.
Coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s side suffered an early blow when new Irish striker Evan Ferguson was forced off injured in the seventh minute, replaced by Jamaican newcomer Leon Bailey.
Roma appeared to have ended the first half in front after Argentine Matias Soulé scored following a cross from Brazilian Wesley França, which the defence failed to clear properly (39). However, the goal was disallowed for offside on Turkey’s Zeki Çelik, who was judged to have interfered in play.
Despite being substituted in the second half, Bailey made way for Moroccan international Nael Aynaoui, also a recent signing. Roma took the lead through Spanish defender Mario Hermoso, who headed home from a Paulo Dybala corner (63).
Roma doubled their advantage in the 81st minute through Ukrainian substitute Artem Dovbyk, who followed up his own rebound after an initial save from the goalkeeper, assisted by Bryan Cristante.
Parma kept the tension alive until the end, pulling one back in the 86th minute through Alessandro Circati from a free kick, but it was not enough to prevent their fourth defeat of the campaign.
In Turin, Juventus returned to victory after eight winless matches in Serie A and the Champions League, a poor run that led to Tudor’s dismissal. The team triumphed 3-1 over Udinese under youth coach Massimo Brambilla, who took interim charge pending the appointment of a new manager—reportedly Luciano Spalletti, the former Italy national team coach.
Juventus took an early lead through a penalty converted by Serbian Dusan Vlahovic (5), who had won it himself after being fouled by Georgian defender Saba Goglichidze.
Vlahovic thought he had added a second, but it was ruled out for offside on American Weston McKennie (17).
Juventus wasted several chances to extend their lead and were punished when Polish substitute Adam Buksa’s shot deflected to Nicolo Zaniolo, who equalised just before half-time (45+1).
After missed opportunities from McKennie and Belgian Lois Openda, defender Federico Gatti restored Juventus’ advantage with a header from a short-corner routine involving Andrea Cambiaso (67).
Juventus continued to dominate, but efforts by Frenchman Pierre Kalulu and Turkish forward Kenan Yildiz were denied by Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, who was helped by the post in the 78th minute.
Yildiz then secured the points by winning and converting a penalty himself in stoppage time (90+6), sealing Juventus’ much-needed victory.
In Milan, Inter bounced back from their 3-1 defeat to Napoli in the previous round, comfortably beating Fiorentina 3-0.
After a goalless first half, Inter took control with two brilliant goals — one from Turkey’s Hakan Çalhanoğlu with a powerful strike from outside the area (66), and another from Croatian newcomer Petar Sučić, who opened his account with a fine individual effort assisted by Argentine Lautaro Martínez (71).
Çalhanoğlu later sealed the win with a second goal from the penalty spot (88) after Mattia Viti fouled Frenchman Ange-Yoan Bonny, earning a red card.
The result lifted Inter to 18 points, level with city rivals Milan, who slipped to fourth place, while Fiorentina remained on just four points, still seeking their first win of the season.
Como extended their unbeaten run to seven matches under Spanish coach Cesc Fàbregas, defeating their visitors 3-1. Goals came from Greek Anastasios Douvikas (9’), Austrian Stefan Posch (62’), and Kosovan Mërgim Vojvoda (90+2’), while German Suat Serdar scored Fiorentina’s lone goal (25’).
Como now sit fifth in the table with 16 points, continuing their impressive form in the Serie A campaign.
