Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD) observed the International Day of Older Persons across its centres and eight branches, under the themes "For a Dignified Life for Our Elders" and "A Generation of Giving Deserves Loyalty." The major event was held in a big tent at the Elderly Care Home, with 15 government and private institutions joining senior residents in the fun. School kids put on artistic performances, while producing families displayed handicrafts and traditional dishes, joined by folk troupes and the Sharjah Museums Authority.

Spreading joy while instilling values
According to Maryam Al Qatari, Director of the Elderly Care Home, the annual event aims to offer enjoyment to seniors, strengthen filial piety ideals, and teach the younger generation the necessity of caring for and learning from this group. She also stated that celebrations will continue until October, with many entities visiting the home on a daily basis to provide unique programs and activities in accordance with this year's theme of "Year of the Community.".

Community and volunteer participation
Volunteers from the Sharjah Centre for Voluntary Work helped organise the event and welcome attendees. Directors from other care homes also attended the celebrations, emphasising the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility when assisting the elderly.

A wide range of activities
The festival included various activities, such as student plays, a military exhibition by the Police Academy, free health checkups provided by the Ministry of Health, and cultural contributions by the Museum of Islamic Civilisation. The Falconers' Association provided photo opportunities with falcons, the Furusaan Al Maqabeel troupe performed traditional dances, and the Sharjah Fisheries Authority and Civil Aviation Authority were in attendance. The day wrapped up with competitions, gift distributions, and traditional food tastes.

University contribution
The University of Sharjah also attended the festivities at the Social Services Centre in Al Madam. Health screenings, dietary consultations, body mass index assessments, and dental treatment were provided by its Ageing Research Centre, in collaboration with the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences.

Ongoing events and increased engagement
Residents of the Elderly Care Home will also participate in the Sharjah Social Services Department's Seniors Forum, which will be held in the Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre. Furthermore, divisions of the department throughout Sharjah are planning trips and outings for seniors to commemorate the event.

The purpose of the celebration
The International Day of Older Persons event seeks to raise awareness of seniors' roles in society, foster social inclusion, and improve quality of life by providing educational and recreational opportunities that promote their physical and mental health. It also aims to create community bonds by encouraging institutions, students, and residents to support and honour the elderly.
