19 dead, 42 missing after migrant boat sinks off Libya

Sharjah 24 – WAM: The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has confirmed that 19 bodies were recovered after a rubber boat carrying migrants sank off the eastern coast of Libya. The incident highlights the dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean.

Boat carried over 70 migrants

According to an IOM spokesperson, the vessel was carrying more than 70 people, mainly Sudanese and South Sudanese nationals. It set sail on September 9 from a beach near the town of Kambut and sank the same day.

Rescue efforts and missing persons

The IOM reported that 14 survivors were rescued five days later, while 42 people remain missing. The organization continues to monitor the situation and calls for increased international efforts to prevent such tragedies.
