Despite entering the match as the world number 8, De Minaur, 26, struggled to convert key opportunities. He earned seven break points but failed to convert any, while Opelka capitalized on his only break point in the second set. The 2.11-meter-tall American used his powerful serve to great effect throughout the match.
This loss ends De Minaur’s solid run on the North American hard court swing. He recently won the Washington Open (ATP 500) and reached the quarterfinals of the Toronto Masters 1000, where he was defeated by eventual champion Ben Shelton.
With this victory, Reilly Opelka, ranked 73rd in the world, moves on to the third round, where he will face Francisco Comesana of Argentina, currently ranked 71st. Comesana, 24, will be seeking to extend his own momentum in the tournament.
