Sharjah24 - AFP: The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that three people were killed in Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon on Saturday, despite an ongoing ceasefire. The Israeli military stated that one of the strikes targeted a Hezbollah militant.

Details of the strikes

According to the ministry, "an Israeli enemy drone strike that targeted a vehicle" in the Tyre district resulted in one death. The Israeli military confirmed that it "struck and eliminated" a Hezbollah commander involved in efforts to strengthen the group in the Bint Jbeil area, near the border. However, the military did not specify the exact location of the strike.

Further casualties

Later reports from the Lebanese Health Ministry indicated that another Israeli strike in Tyre, specifically in the town of Debaal, killed two additional people. The state-run National News Agency noted that this strike targeted a residential house. The Israeli military has not yet responded to inquiries regarding this incident.

Context of ongoing hostilities

Israel has continued its strikes on Lebanon despite a ceasefire established in November, which aimed to end over a year of conflict with Hezbollah, including two months of intense warfare. Israel has warned that it will persist with its strikes until the Iran-backed militant group is disarmed.

Terms of the ceasefire

Under the terms of the ceasefire, Hezbollah was expected to withdraw its fighters north of the Litani River, approximately 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the Israeli border, leaving the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeepers as the only armed entities in the region. While Israel was to withdraw its troops, it has maintained a presence in five strategic areas.
