Sharjah 24 – WAM: The United Nations expressed deep concern over the rising tensions along the Blue Line in southern Lebanon, following a second exchange of fire in one week.

Call for restraint and avoiding further escalation

UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Janine Hennis-Plasschaert, warned that repeated exchanges of fire mark a dangerous escalation, and a return to broader conflict would have severe consequences for civilians on both sides of the Blue Line. She urged all parties to show restraint and work towards de-escalation.

Importance of adhering to international agreements

Hennis-Plasschaert emphasized the need for all parties to adhere to the commitments made in the November 2024 cessation of hostilities understanding and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006), which aims to prevent further violence. The UN remains committed to working with relevant parties to ensure the resolution's full implementation.
