Elder painted a grim picture of life in Gaza, describing the conditions as “bleak, horrific, and hopeless.” He highlighted the stark imbalance between the influx of bombs and missiles compared to the limited entry of food and humanitarian aid.
Brief improvements in aid access and supplies were seen during early ceasefire discussions, but Elder said that optimism quickly faded due to a tightening blockade that continues to restrict humanitarian relief efforts.
Families endure nights of airstrikes and days of displacement and hunger. Many have lived in tents for over six months and are being forced to relocate again due to ongoing violence, Elder noted, adding that Gaza has suffered for more than 600 consecutive days.
Elder warned that malnourished children are dying from diseases that are normally treatable, and that accessing the few remaining partially functional hospitals is often unsafe. Of the 19 still operating hospitals, only eight are public and all suffer from critical shortages of medical supplies.
