Sharjah 24 – AFP: The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has confirmed that defender Alessandro Bongiorno will miss the upcoming 2026 World Cup European qualifiers against Norway and Moldova, scheduled for June 6 and 9. Bongiorno, who has 10 caps for the national team, has not recovered from a thigh injury and will return to his club for treatment.

Luca Ranieri called up as replacement

In Bongiorno’s absence, Italy coach Luciano Spalletti has called up Fiorentina defender Luca Ranieri. This marks a potential debut for the 26-year-old, who has previously represented Italy at youth level but is yet to make a senior appearance.

Italy aims for World Cup return

Coach Spalletti will continue preparations with a 27-man squad as Italy looks to return to the FIFA World Cup after missing the last two editions. The matches against Norway and Moldova will be crucial early steps in Italy’s qualifying campaign.
