University of Sharjah launches 1st Int’l Public Health Conference

Sharjah 24: The University of Sharjah (UOS), through its Centre of Excellence for Public Health (CEPH) under the Research Institute for Medical and Health Sciences (RIMHS), organised the 1st International Public Health Conference (IPHC) under the theme “Driving Innovation, Engagement, and Collaboration for a Healthier UAE.”

Two-day conference

The two-day conference brought together public health professionals, researchers, policymakers, healthcare providers, and technology innovators from the UAE and beyond to address critical public health challenges. The conference aimed to foster interdisciplinary partnerships and facilitate the exchange of knowledge through a holistic approach to public health, thereby supporting the UAE’s vision of becoming a regional leader in public health innovation and achieving sustainable health outcomes.

Deep appreciation

In his opening remarks, His Excellency Prof. Esameldin Agamy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, welcomed the attendees and expressed his deep appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, for his continued support of education, research, and innovation.

Reflects the University’s commitment to advancing public health in UAE

The Chancellor emphasised that organising this conference reflects the University’s commitment to advancing public health in the UAE as a cornerstone of national well-being, sustainable development, and global solidarity. He noted that the University offers more than 40 undergraduate and graduate programs in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and allied health sciences, in addition to several research centres and institutes affiliated with the medical colleges.

Explores cutting-edge, data-driven strategies, digital health tools, and community-based approaches

The Chancellor further highlighted that the conference explores cutting-edge, data-driven strategies, digital health tools, and community-based approaches that have the potential to create meaningful, positive impacts on population health. He emphasised that the conference focuses on practical solutions to real-world challenges, from managing chronic diseases and promoting mental well-being to utilising artificial intelligence for the public good.

Represents an important step in unifying and strengthening efforts 

Prof. Qutayba Hamid, Vice Chancellor for Medical and Health Sciences Colleges, and Dean of the College of Medicine, stated that the conference represents an important step in unifying and strengthening efforts to collect accurate data on chronic and acute diseases in the country, emphasising that this will be achieved through collaboration with various local and international entities. He also expressed his sincere gratitude and appreciation to everyone who contributed to the success of the conference, including the organising committees, sponsors, and supporters.

Serves as a vital platform for exchange of knowledge and expertise

Prof. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, emphasised that the conference serves as a vital platform for the exchange of knowledge and expertise, as well as an opportunity to build partnerships with experts from various academic institutions, government entities, and hospitals worldwide. He noted that the event aims to promote collaborative applied research addressing societal needs. Prof. Bettayeb further highlighted the critical importance of public health, especially in light of the rapid developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning. He pointed out that leveraging these cutting-edge technologies can significantly contribute to overcoming challenges faced by professionals in the healthcare sector and to improving the quality of medical services provided to the community.

Addressing major health challenges in UAE and Middle East region

Prof. Basema Saddik, Director of the Centre of Excellence for Public Health, indicated that one of the Centre’s goals is to address major health challenges in the country and the Middle East region, with a focus on non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases, environmental and occupational health, and mental health. She explained that the conference focuses on three main pillars to address the UAE’s public health priorities and achieve sustainable health outcomes including innovation, engagement, and collaboration, where participants will explore the role of digital health technologies, data-driven approaches, and evidence-based practices in advancing public health.

Featured interactive workshops and panel discussions

The conference featured interactive workshops and panel discussions addressing key topics aimed at enhancing public health through innovative initiatives advancing baby- and family-friendly environments in Sharjah, strengthening the UAE’s public health systems, and exploring the role of artificial intelligence in medicine. Discussions also emphasised the importance of community involvement in health promotion, strategies for preventing non-communicable diseases. Other sessions explored the human health perspective on contaminants and disease risk in a changing climate.

An exhibition of scientific posters

An exhibition of scientific posters was held, showcasing innovative research from participating researchers. The event also featured a special ceremony to recognise and honor the keynote speakers and sponsors for their contributions to the success of the conference.
