Sharjah24 - AFP: On a mission to document all of Ireland's bird species, many of which are declining, an Irish ornithologist has created a unique audio archive aimed at raising awareness and fostering hope.

The State of Ireland's bird population

According to conservation groups, approximately 63 percent of Ireland's birds are currently listed as red or amber, indicating serious or moderate extinction risks. The ornithologist expresses concern about the global decline in bird populations, stating, "The loss of wildlife is devastating."

Focus on hope and beauty

Despite the grim situation, he emphasizes the importance of hope and beauty in nature. Over four years, he has recorded 201 different Irish bird species, amassing over 12,000 audio clips from across the country. Only two species remain to be documented: the great skua and red-breasted merganser.

The impact of habitat loss

While Ireland is known for its lush landscapes, the ornithologist describes a stark reality of degraded environments and diminished bird populations due to habitat loss. He points to intensive farming practices and non-native conifer plantations as significant threats to biodiversity.

Engaging the public through sound

Last year, he published an award-winning book, released two albums, and created a documentary film. His talk tour has been well-received, showcasing how wildlife sound can connect people to nature. During these events, he plays various bird calls, inviting audiences to guess their origins.

Experiencing the dawn chorus

He regularly leads "dawn chorus" walks, taking small groups into quiet forests to experience the awakening birdlife. He explains that a diverse range of sounds reflects the health of the environment, as healthier habitats support a greater variety of species.

Innovative recording techniques

To capture the calls of birds, he hides recorders in remote areas for weeks or even months. These recordings help monitor bird populations and tell environmental stories through sound. Each audio entry is meticulously cataloged, including data on behavior and conservation status.

A call to action

The ornithologist believes that society must recognize the beauty and fragility of nature. He asserts that by rekindling our love for the environment, we can inspire positive change and protect Ireland's rich avian heritage.
