UOS, ECA launch Forum for People with Disabilities

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah (UOS), the University of Sharjah, in collaboration with the Emirates Creativity Association (ECA) , launched the International Creativity and Empowerment Forum for People with Disabilities. The forum, held under the theme “New Pathways towards a Comprehensive and Sustainable Society,” was attended by His Excellency Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Creativity Association, and His Excellency Prof Esameldin Ibrahim Ajami, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, along with representatives from the association, college deans, faculty, administrative staff, and students.
The forum aligns with the vision of the United Arab Emirates to foster a culture of creativity and innovation in society, particularly among people with disabilities. This vision affirms the national belief that disability can serve as a powerful driver for uncovering the potential of people with disabilities. In response, the forum aimed to highlight the unique abilities of people with disabilities, invest in their talents, and promote a culture of innovation and self-confidence. It also provided an opportunity to showcase creative projects and initiatives produced by people with disabilities in various fields, as well as to share their success stories as sources of inspiration for others.

His Excellency Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Humaid Al Qasimi expressed his pride in partnering with the University of Sharjah, stating that the Emirates Creativity Association believes the empowerment of people with disabilities must go beyond the basic concept of accessibility to include active involvement in innovation, education, art, and entrepreneurship. His Excellency also emphasized the importance of providing people with disabilities with the opportunity to showcase their talents and capabilities, highlighting that the forum serves as an inspiring platform for exchanging ideas and inspirational stories.

His Excellency Prof Esameldin Ibrahim Ajami reaffirmed the University of Sharjah’s commitment to empowering all segments of society. He noted that the University's Disability Resource Center plays a vital role in offering academic, psychological, and technical support to ensure that students with disabilities thrive in their university life. He added that the University has established specific policies and employed a comprehensive, integrated work system to ensure an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students, considering the current rapid digital transformation.

Her Excellency Mona Khalifa Hammad, Member of the Federal National Council, emphasized the importance of passing effective legislation and proposing initiatives to empower people with disabilities.  In her address to the gathering, Her Excellency Mona Abdul Karim Al Yafie, Director General of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS), highlighted the organization's initiatives to enhance the skills of persons with disabilities, helping them explore their potential and pursue innovation in various fields.

The forum included six main sessions that addressed various topics focusing on the creativity of the target segment of society. Speakers from the University of Sharjah, and representatives from educational and social organizations for people with disabilities shared their experiences in supporting and empowering this section of society. The sessions covered the many thought-provoking topics such as the role of assistive technology and artificial intelligence in empowering people with disabilities ; Creativity, Arts, and Culture: a journey of self-discovery and challenging societal stereotypes about disability; Education and Creativity: the impact of education and entrepreneurship on enhancing skills and capabilities of people with disabilities; Inspirational Stories and Creative Experiences: showcasing the success stories of entrepreneurs with disabilities; and the Impact of a Supportive Creative Environment: the role of family, community, and media in nurturing the talents and potential of people with disabilities.

On the sidelines of the forum, the Emirates Exhibition of the Creativity of People with Disabilities was inaugurated, where His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Khalid bin Humaid Al Qasimi and His Excellency Prof. Esameldin Ibrahim Ajami toured the exhibition, which featured artworks representing various rehabilitation centres across the UAE. The exhibition included scientific innovations, artworks, and social initiatives that reflected their exceptional abilities and unique talents. The event concluded with the recognition of speakers and participants and the exchange of memorable shields.
