SEC issues decision to regulate media activities in Sharjah

Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Executive Council (SEC), during its meeting, on Tuesday, chaired by His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Vice Chairman of the Council, issued a decision regarding the regulation of media activities in the Emirate of Sharjah.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Vice Chairman of the Sharjah Executive Council (SEC), chaired the council’s meeting, on Tuesday, at the Sharjah Ruler’s Office.

The meeting was attended by His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Vice Chairman of the Sharjah Executive Council (SEC).

During the meeting, the Council reviewed general government policies and the financial results of the Government of Sharjah, and discussed ways to enhance these policies in line with the significant development and comprehensive growth taking place across all segments of society and various sectors in the Emirate.

Performance Report and Sector Outcomes

The Council reviewed the performance report of the general budget and the outcomes of activities and achievement rates of the targeted deliverables for governmental and independent entities for the second half of 2024. These covered several sectors including social development, government administration, infrastructure, capital projects, and economic development. The Council affirmed its support for all entities in achieving their objectives and planned strategies to improve government operations.

Approval of Final Accounts for 2024

The Council approved the final account report for the year 2024, which presents the actual financial results, expenditures, and revenues of government departments and independent entities in the Emirate of Sharjah for the fiscal year 2024, with comparisons to the previous year.

New Decision on Regulating Media Activities in Sharjah

The Council issued a decision concerning the regulation of media activities in the Emirate of Sharjah. The decision aims to ensure the comprehensive and sustainable regulation of all forms of media activities, and to develop a robust legal and legislative framework for governing media operations and content. It seeks to enhance the quality and diversity of media content, in a way that reflects the cultural identity and values of the Emirate. It also aims to create an attractive investment environment for media professionals and investors, while fostering innovation in the media sector.

The decision outlines the competencies of the Sharjah Media Council, while observing relevant federal and local legislation and ensuring coordination among the concerned entities to achieve the decision’s goals. It also includes legal provisions related to media ownership, media institutions, broadcast and electronic/digital media activities, permits, approvals, and content standards, among others.

Review of 2024 Social Services Department Report

The Council reviewed the 2024 annual report of the Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD), which outlined key statistics on beneficiaries of social security, care, social protection, and community service. The report also detailed figures on recipients of social assistance and the supplementary grant for Sharjah retirees, totaling 4,836 beneficiaries and exceeding AED 119 million in support.

The Council was briefed on the efforts and achievements of the department’s various centres and divisions.
