Sharjah 24: Al Asalah Club, part of the Elderly Services Centre at the Sharjah Social Services Department, is doing remarkable work with its 599 members, who are elderly men and women over the age of 60. Despite their age, these individuals are active and eager to help others in times of need.

Recently, a group of volunteers from the “Al Khair and Al Baraka” (Goodness and blessing) teams took part in two annual community initiatives: “Water Supply” and “Warm Winter.” These programs are aimed at supporting workers, and they are organized in collaboration with Sharjah Municipality. Samia Al Shamsi, who oversees the Asalah Club, shared that about 30 inspiring mothers aged 60 to 77 gathered at National Park last Monday to spread warmth during the winter. They handed out blankets and winter clothing like hats, socks, and jackets to help protect outdoor workers from the cold.

Additionally, the mothers provided refreshments, including drinks and simple meals made up of fruits, pastries, and dates, to 130 workers involved in gardening.

What stands out is that these generous women prepared and financed the distributions themselves, embodying the spirit of "fazza," which means rushing to help those in need. This value of helping others has been passed down to them from their grandparents and is similar to the spirit of volunteering.

Since its establishment in 2009, Al Asalah Club has focused on enhancing the lives of the elderly by offering a lively environment full of social activities and programs. They cover a wide range of areas, including culture, social engagement, religion, and personal development.

The club also provides important medical and therapy services, which help elderly members engage in various activities, enjoy meeting friends, and participate in cultural, religious, and recreational events—helping to combat feelings of isolation that can come from being at home alone.
