Sharjah24: The inaugural Sharjah Festival of African Literature (SFAL) hosted a panel discussion titled ‘Much More Than Wakanda’, featuring some of Africa's most remarkable voices in speculative fiction. The panel brought together award-winning writers Cheryl Ntumy, Wole Talabi, and Tendai Huchu.

Ntumy, a Ghanaian writer, specialises in speculative, young adult, and romance fiction. She is one of the founding members of the Sauútiverse Collective.

Talabi, an award-winning Nigerian writer and editor, is celebrated for his works like Shigidi and the Brass Head of Obalufom. He is known for his contributions to African futurism and innovative storytelling.

Huchu, from Zimbabwe, is the author of the acclaimed Edinburgh Nights series and a winner of the Caine Prize. His work blends African and Western folklore into innovative speculative fiction.

Exploration of African Storytelling Beyond Wakanda

The panel at the Sharjah Festival of African Literature delved into the global impact of Marvel's Black Panther and its portrayal of Wakanda. The discussion contrasted this with the rich and varied African narratives, pushing back against homogenized representations often seen in global media.

Wakanda's Influence and African Narratives

The authors acknowledged Wakanda's breakthrough in showcasing dark skin excellence but highlighted its limitations as a singular representation of Africa. They emphasized the need for more diverse and nuanced storytelling that reflects the continent's true richness.

Empowering African Storytelling

The writers stressed the importance of African creative control over narratives. Collaborative projects like the Sauútiverse were celebrated for showcasing the potential of African-led storytelling. They emphasized the global appetite for authentic African stories and the necessity of telling them on their terms.

Embracing African Authenticity

Huchu emphasized the diversity of African stories and the need to break free from stereotypical narratives. The panel called on readers, publishers, and media houses to invest in authentic African storytelling, highlighting the importance of championing these narratives with support and resources.

Sharjah Festival of African Literature: A Platform for Cultural Exchange

The Sharjah Festival of African Literature serves as a crucial platform for discussions on African art, music, and storytelling. By fostering connections between Africa and the UAE's diverse residents, SFAL aims to promote cultural exchange and appreciation.
