Sharjah 24: Nigerian author Lola Shoneyin, participating in the ongoing Sharjah Festival of African Literature (SFAL), which kicked off on Friday at the University City Hall in Sharjah, praised the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) for its groundbreaking initiative.

First of its Kind in the Arab World

Speaking at the festival, Shoneyin expressed her admiration for the SBA's efforts, calling the festival “a marvelous job.” She highlighted that SFAL is the first event of its kind in the Arab world, where an Arab country is organising an event dedicated to celebrating African literature. Shoneyin emphasised the importance of such collaboration, stating that it fosters a deeper understanding between cultures, helping to challenge perceptions and stereotypes.

Fostering unity and understanding

Shoneyin also reflected on the significance of Sharjah’s continuous efforts to unite people from the global south through fairs and conferences. She commended Sharjah for making attendees feel welcomed, creating a sense of unity and shared purpose. "This kind of togetherness helps us fight oppression and, most importantly, it allows us to understand each other better," Shoneyin concluded.
