Sharjah24: Marking a significant development in the ongoing talks with the Republic of Uganda on advancing sustainability, BEEAH, the region’s sustainability and innovation pioneer, recently held discussions with the Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to explore sustainable waste management solutions for the East African nation. The meeting took place between the Ugandan President and Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO and Vice Chairman of BEEAH, and their delegations, on the sidelines of the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW).

The discussion focussed on potential collaborations in full-circle solutions for sustainable waste management, starting with waste collection and city cleaning, integrated recycling and progressing to waste-to-energy solutions to help meet power demand in Uganda. In Sharjah, where BEEAH was founded as a public-private partnership and is headquartered, landfill diversion rate has reached over 90%—one of the highest globally—owing to its integrated waste management ecosystem spanning collection to integrated recycling and a waste-to-energy plant. BEEAH’s international efforts in sustainable waste management have also been strengthened through collaboration with local municipalities and government entities, such as the SIRC and Al-Mqr Development Authority in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Administrative Capital for Urban Development (ACUD) in Egypt. BEEAH is exploring similar public-private partnership models to replicate their success in UAE, KSA and Egypt, for Uganda’s sustainability and clean energy agenda.

Commenting on the discussions, Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO and Vice Chairman of BEEAH, stated: “It was an honour to meet with President Museveni and his delegation, which brought us the opportunity to strengthen our ongoing dialogue and deepen our engagement to explore a collaboration with Uganda to realise a future with sustainable waste management and clean energy. We are excited at the opportunity to partner with local Ugandan entities, so that we can tailor our proven solutions in the UAE, KSA and Egypt, and make a positive impact for the environment and society at scale.”

Following the meeting between the Ugandan President and the BEEAH Group CEO and Vice Chairman in Abu Dhabi, H.E. Zaake Wanume Kibedi, Ambassador of the Republic of Uganda to the UAE, led a high-level delegation to the BEEAH Headquarters in Sharjah. BEEAH briefed the Ugandan delegation on the specialised recycling and waste processing facilities in its four-sq.km waste management complex, the 30 MW Sharjah Waste to Energy plant that diverts 300,000 tonnes of hard-to-recycle waste every year, and the BEEAH Headquarters, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and integrated with sustainable technologies that have earned the building a LEED Platinum certification. During the visit, BEEAH highlighted the opportunity in Uganda to begin with waste collection, city cleaning and integrated recycling services, which would set up the necessary foundation for sustainable waste management and circularity, before introducing waste-to-energy to tackle the challenge of hard-to-recycle waste while generating clean energy to meet the nation’s growing power requirements.

In late 2024, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, and H.E. Ambassador Kibedi, had also visited the BEEAH Headquarters in Sharjah to discuss potential collaborations. The recent dialogue with Ugandan President Museveni during WFES in Abu Dhabi, and the delegation’s visit to BEEAH Headquarters in Sharjah thereafter, marks a new milestone for strengthening discussions between BEEAH and Uganda.

During WFES at ADSW, BEEAH also announced its plans with Masdar, a joint venture partner on the Sharjah Waste to Energy plant, to double the plant’s capabilities and scale power output to 60 MW, displace up to one million tonnes of emissions every year, and increase waste processing to 600,000 tons to bring Sharjah closer to total landfill diversion. BEEAH also announced a groundbreaking Hydrogen from Waste project, the first commercial scale project in the Middle East, in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Chinook Hydrogen. The Hydrogen from Waste plant is slated for commissioning in Q2 2027 and will produce thousands of tonnes of green hydrogen every year, ready to support a future empowered by emission-free energy production and green mobility.

For its potential collaborations with Uganda, BEEAH will leverage its end-to-end waste management expertise, including waste-to-energy technologies, to address the increasing need for waste management solutions and electricity— which are common challenges for developing nations—and help shape a sustainable and empowered future.
