Sharjah 24: The Cultural Office of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah hosted the Sharjah Cultural Salon, titled “Challenges of Responsibility in Cultural Leadership.” The event featured Dr. Sultan Al Amimi, Chairman of the Emirates Writers Union, with the discussion moderated by poet and author Sheikha Al Jabri. Attendees included numerous individuals interested in cultural affairs.
The session explored a range of topics, including Dr. Al Amimi’s insights on the evolution of cultural institutions in the UAE. He emphasised the connection between the cultural landscape before and after the establishment of the Emirates Writers Union, noting a vibrant cultural movement, particularly in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah. Following the union’s formation, a robust framework emerged for cultural institutions, notably the Ministry of Culture, which plays a significant role in the cultural ecosystem.

Dr. Al Amimi highlighted that the UAE’s cultural identity is inherently strong, shaped by a commitment to hosting prominent figures in literature, poetry, and the arts, as well as organising book fairs, poetry evenings, cultural seminars, and festivals. The high performance of cultural institutions in the UAE has resulted in exemplary models worth emulating. A distinctive cultural character has flourished, supported by leadership that fosters development and continuity through collaboration among various entities, including the Ministry of Education, media, and other institutions.

Addressing the challenges faced by cultural leadership, Dr. Al Amimi remarked on the unique characteristics of the UAE's cultural environment, where inclusivity prevails. He noted that cultural contributions transcend differences in religion, nationality, and language, enriching the nation’s cultural scene. Everyone in the UAE is invested in its cultural development, with the Emirates Writers Union welcoming participation from all who seek to enhance the country's cultural landscape. The country consistently emphasises its Emirati identity while clarifying responsibilities and rights through relevant laws.

Discussing the traits of effective cultural leaders, Dr. Al Amimi distinguished between leaders and managers, pointing out that each has distinct qualities. He stressed that cultural leadership requires specific attributes—personality, experience, and skills—that often outweigh formal qualifications. While management skills are essential, he argued that leaders should have a genuine interest and expertise in the specific field of the institution they oversee. For example, leaders of artistic institutions should possess relevant artistic skills and knowledge.

Dr. Al Amimi concluded by underscoring that effective leadership in cultural contexts must be impartial and professional, free from personal biases or relationships that could influence administrative decisions.
