Sharjah 24 – Reuters: The death toll from Typhoon Yagi and the resulting landslides and flash floods in Vietnam has risen to 254, with ongoing search efforts as floodwaters recede. The storm, the strongest to hit Asia this year, struck the northeastern coast on Saturday.
More than 820 people have been injured and 82 remain missing, according to the state disaster management agency. Efforts are focused on locating 41 individuals unaccounted for after a flash flood destroyed 37 homes in Nu Village, Lao Cai province, on Tuesday. Forty-six confirmed deaths have been reported from this village.

In another Lao Cai village, 115 previously missing individuals have returned safely after sheltering on a mountain. They used bamboo and tarpaulins to make temporary shelters and survived on foraged bamboo shoots after running out of food.

UNICEF reports that hundreds of thousands of children have lost their homes and lack access to clean water, sanitation, and healthcare. Approximately 2 million children are without education, psychosocial support, and school feeding programs due to damaged schools and infrastructure.

The agency estimates an initial need of $15 million to address urgent needs. In Hanoi, floodwaters on the Red River are receding, and some bridges have reopened. Insurance claims for damage from the typhoon, floods, and landslides have reached 7 trillion dong ($285.36 million) as of Thursday, according to the finance ministry.
