Sharjah 24 – AFP: A Russian missile struck an Egypt-bound cargo ship carrying wheat in the Black Sea on Thursday, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Black Sea, a vital trade route for Ukraine, has become a battleground since Russia's invasion.
"Russia launched a missile at a civilian vessel just after it left Ukrainian waters," Zelensky said on social media. There were no casualties, but he called for global condemnation of the attack.
Zelensky stressed the importance of the safe passage of Ukrainian agricultural exports, which are critical to global food stability. Despite Russia pulling out of a UN-brokered deal for safe passage last year, Ukraine has maintained a maritime corridor for exports. Over 5,000 ships have used the route, according to Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov. Russia's invasion initially spiked global food prices, as concerns grew over disruptions to Ukraine's grain exports.
