Sharjah 24 – AFP: Norway's Markus Rooth claimed gold in a gripping finale to the Olympic decathlon in Paris on Saturday.
Rooth accumulated 8,796 points over the two-day, 10-discipline event, only making sure of victory in the 1500m.
Germany's Leo Neugebauer took silver with 8,748pts, Lindon Victor of Grenada claiming bronze (8,711).
Rooth managed first-day bests of 10.71sec in the 100m, 7.80m in the long jump, 15.25m in the shot put, 1.99m in the high jump, and 47.69sec in the 400m.
The second day of action saw the Norwegian clock 14.25sec for the 110m hurdles before managing bests of 49.80m in the discus, 5.30m in the pole vault and 66.87m in the javelin. He then timed 4:39.56 for the strength-sapping 1500m.
