Hymen Lipman, an American engineer who invented the pencil eraser tip, tackled the problem of eraser loss. Traditional solutions, like keeping the eraser in a small bag or using a fixed holder, were inconvenient. Lipman’s simple yet creative idea transformed this challenge into an innovative breakthrough, revolutionising the pencil industry.

Problem-solving is a regular part of life, whether at home, work, or elsewhere. When traditional methods fall short, creative solutions come into play. Creative problem-solving skilfully addresses issues through inventive approaches. It does not rely only on brainstorming; it follows a structured process, starting with identifying the problem and working towards solutions.

This method encourages imagination, explores diverse perspectives, and generates innovative answers to complex issues. It is more than just fixing problems; it is about innovation and creating new opportunities. As Albert Einstein said: "In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity."

Yet, it is worth considering: is creativity in finding solutions a born talent or an acquired skill?

The answer to that lies in the fact that problem-solving is a skill that can be significantly improved by understanding specific steps and continuously seeking enhancements, leading to success across various fields.

Below are the steps for mastering problem-solving with ingenuity and expertise:

Step one: identifying the problem

"A problem well-stated is a problem half-solved." - the American inventor Charles Kettering.

The first and most crucial step in solving problems creatively is to precisely define the issue and understand its scope. Often, the problem identified initially may not be the actual problem, leading solutions astray. Therefore, it is vital to thoroughly analyse the problem to dispel any uncertainties about its accuracy.

For instance, if the problem appears to be insufficient income, the initial approach might be to seek a new job. However, the true issue might be that income does not cover living expenses. In such cases, it is essential to explore alternative solutions, such as managing expenses, improving budgeting, enhancing skills for better-paying positions, or seeking different job opportunities.

To identify the core problem, begin by asking questions like "What caused this?" and "Why is it crucial to resolve?" Repeatedly addressing these questions can reveal the underlying issue and inspire innovative solutions.

Step two: learning more about the problem

After identifying the problem, delve deeper to understand it by consulting reputable sources, whether online or in print. Seeking insights from friends, colleagues, or family members can also yield valuable perspectives. Remember, the approach to solving the problem may vary based on its nature, and some issues might necessitate consulting specialists, like psychological concerns.

Tip: Collecting information from various sources provides a complete and accurate understanding of the problem.

Step three: asking questions

After conducting thorough research and gathering all relevant details, it is essential to formulate challenging and creative questions and provide precise answers. Questions such as "What is the optimal solution to this problem?" or "How can this be achieved?" help direct focus towards resolving the issue.

Tackling one goal at a time prevents idea dispersion and fosters greater success. Concentrating efforts on a single task—whether it is mastering a new skill or securing employment in a specific location—rather than juggling multiple objectives enhances the likelihood of success. Also, addressing each goal individually improves the chances of achieving it.

Step four: brainstorming ideas

To find creative solutions to a problem, consider generating at least 50 ideas. Engage friends or family and use techniques like brainstorming, relaxation, or online search.

Various methods can aid your brainstorming process, including quiet activities like walking, enjoying coffee, or exploring online sources that spark creativity. It is also important to note that producing all ideas in a single day is unnecessary, especially if there is no urgent deadline.

Use various methods—such as jotting down notes, typing in documents, or creating mind maps—to capture and stabilise solutions. Record every thought, regardless of its relevance or feasibility, rather than relying solely on memory.

Step five: collecting and evaluating ideas

After noting down ideas, it is helpful to take a brief break, whether for an hour or a day. When you return, begin by organising and assessing these ideas based on predetermined criteria and constraints.

Be sure to factor in all limitations, such as budget and time restrictions. Select ideas that meet these criteria, prioritising the most promising ones. Each idea should then be evaluated based on how well it aligns with the criteria and consider ways to enhance those that did not rank highly.

Step six: implementing the solutions

With a list of the best and most innovative ideas, the next step is to develop a detailed action plan with possible steps to solve the problem. Breaking down the steps into manageable tasks will make the implementation process more practical. It is essential for individuals to be bold and committed when initiating the plan. If the solution fails to address the issue, they should adjust the action plan as needed.
