Sharjah 24: The General Secretariat of the Sharjah Award for Artistic Criticism Research has chosen "The Arab World in Artistic Orientalism... Cultural Aesthetic Dimensions" as the theme for the 15th edition of the award, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
This decision was made during a meeting convened by the General Secretariat at the Sharjah Department of Culture to select the title for the new edition and to invite participation from writers, critics, and those interested in art criticism, adhering to the award's terms and conditions.
Mohammad Ibrahim Al Qaseer, Director of Cultural Affairs at the Sharjah Culture Department and the Secretary-General of the award, stated that since its establishment in 2008, the award has played a significant role in advancing Arab visual art criticism, as per the directives of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, reflecting his commitment to supporting culture and arts.
Al Qaseer explained that the award aims to enhance research works and broaden interest in Arab artistic critical experiences, documenting them through various publications and encouraging young critical talents. He noted that over its various editions, the award has recognised over 50 winners from different Arab countries, enriching the Arab library's critical output.
The Secretary-General emphasised that the title of the current edition, "The Arab World in Artistic Orientalism... Cultural Aesthetic Dimensions," seeks to establish the importance of artistic critical research in Orientalism and explore the broader aesthetic aspects of Arab civilisation.
The Director of the Cultural Affairs Department highlighted that the award's title aims to address how Western artists have depicted the Arab East civilisation by representing the Arab world and its surroundings through creative works, offering an artistic perspective on humanity, place, and time.
The Sharjah Award for Artistic Criticism Research is unique in the Arab world for its focus on this critical field, recognising the efforts of Arab writers, critics, and academics. While it updates its critical theme, keeping abreast of the latest developments in the fine arts.
