Sharjah24: “Photography is a mean to change misconceptions about our country, and provide a cultural narrative that shows the true values of our region,” said Emirati artist and educator Ahlam AlBannai, during her enlightening talk “The Power of Images and Photography in Cultural Representation” on Saturday, March 2, at the Xposure International Photography Festival (Xposure 2024) in Sharjah.
“I am not a daily life photographer, but I narrate stories from my own perspective,” said AlBannai who has done a series of images on doors in the UAE.

According to AlBannai, who has widely portrayed the Emirati traditions, heritage structures and people, an accurate knowledge about societies and their culture will not be possible without photographs. She traced the history of photography in the UAE, which achieved stupendous transformation from small villages to the tallest buildings, and how the medium has become affordable and accessible to all now.

Exploring the profound impact of visual arts, particularly images and photography on representing and preserving cultural narratives, she gave the instance of the carvings of flowers and inscriptions on doors in the country at a time when fishing and pearl harvesting were the main occupations.

Drawing from years of experience engaging with diverse communities, conducting research and imparting artistic knowledge to new generations, AlBannai offered a unique perspective that helped attendees gain valuable insights on the transformative power of visual storytelling in preserving cultural heritage.

“My camera and lens are my windows, giving viewers a chance to see things from a different perspective,” stated the educator-entrepreneur, who owns Ahlam Photo Studio, and is a faculty member in applied media at Higher Colleges of Technology, Dubai. She has travelled extensively, capturing images of different tribes and cultures from the long-necked women of Burma (Myanmar) to young girls in Taif, the city of roses in Saudi Arabia.

“The UAE is a country that has a global and strategic presence. My role as a photographer is to give an idea about my country. Photography is a science and culture that helps to educate about the country,” underscored Ahlam, who has actively participated in international photography conferences, workshops, and exhibitions, showcasing her passion for visual art and storytelling.

Organised by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB), the seven-day event will run until March 5.
