Honouring winners of ‘Global Focus Project’ and IFPA at Xposure

Sharjah24: In the presence of Tariq Saeed Allay, Director General of the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, and Alia Al Suwaidi, Director of the SGMB, the bureau organised on Friday a ceremony honouring the winners of the Global Focus Project award and the Independent & Freelance Photojournalist Award – IFPA, as part of the activities of the International Photography Festival “Xposure 2024”.
Alyazia Al Ghafli, Head of the Multimedia Department at the SGMB, stated that the overall IFPA 2023/2024 winner was awarded to Oleksandr Rupeta for his captivating project, “The Other Days of Life,”and photographer Valery Melnikov received the runner-up prize for his influential work, “Apocalypse in Mariupol.”

She added that Xposure 2024, witnessed the launch of a new initiative entitled Global Focus which aimed to select the two most beautiful photos from different continents, where 12 photographers from 6 continents were honoured.

Al Ghafli noted that the diversity and increase in the number of awards at the festival would provide the opportunity for visitors to enjoy a rich combination of visual arts from a large group of international photographers, promote positive competition, attract more talent, and exchange and gain experiences in the fields of photography.

Thandiwe Muriu, from Africa, won an award for her work "Camo," which showcases Africa’s mix of vibrant textiles, cultural practices, and beauty ideologies.

Muriu expressed her exhilaration at receiving the award, viewing it as an affirmation of the potency of stories emerging from the continent. She extends her appreciation to the International Photograph Festival “Xposure” for affording her the opportunity to travel and immerse herself in the diverse experiences of the photographic community.

Gurcharan Roopra, won the award for his collection, "The High and Low of Wildlife Photography," which is a blend of aerial shots and ground-level photography, showcasing the beauty of nature.

During his second participation in the Xposure festival, Roopra submitted his entries for the "Global Focus Projects" awards.  He was delighted to win the award. The festival's grandeur and the magnificent display of numerous photographs are unparalleled and have left him in amazement. He added that he had never witnessed such a spectacular visual feast anywhere else in the world. 

Valery Melnikov received the runner-up prize for his powerful work, “Apocalypse in Mariupol.” Melnikov’s project captivated the jury with its poignant portrayal of the ongoing conflict’s devastating impact on Mariupol and its parallels to historical tragedies.

He expressed his immense pleasure and enthusiasm to attend Xposure as it is a significant event in the domain of photography and culture.
